Ernest Bramah - Kai Lung’s Golden Hours
There are few situations in life that cannot be honourably settled, and without loss of time, either by suicide, a bag of gold, or by thrusting a despised antagonist over the edge of a precipice upon a dark night.

Five Plus One

1. Settle Honourably

"Listen, you fool." Lyle stared straight into the young private's eyes. "You're stuck. You don't have one tiny, whimpering, whining sliver of an excuse for welching on that bet. Not one single solitary soldier will believe that you didn't make it, and not one will believe that you were too drunk to know what you were agreeing to. Even if they did, any man who gets so pissed that he can't keep track of his own words is too stupid to be a soldier in the first place. Settle up honourably, and it's over."

"Yes, sir," the unhappy youngster whispered.

2. Without Loss of Time

"Do you think he'll pay up?" Kermit spoke softly to Blade as they watched the young man plod dejectedly away from Lieutenant Lyle's office.

After taking a quick glance across the break area to check the private's demeanour, Blade shrugged.

"I haven't the foggiest," he admitted. "I do know that he's completely fucking broke, has been for months. Every fucking paycheque has gone straight out the door as soon as he gets it."

"Christ," Kermit whispered. "What kind of shit is he into? And why hasn't he been kicked?"

"No idea. For some reason, the bosses are taking their time."

3. Suicide

"I'm worried about Kelly." Ditzy stopped by Lyle's office to turn in his latest report on the new recruits.

The experienced Special Forces soldiers might have been handed the unenviable assignment of baby-sitting the latest crop of army volunteers on the grounds that they needed a rest but the Regiment couldn't afford to have them out of touch, but Ditzy was going to do his best at the job, no matter how basic it might be.

"He's not going to commit suicide or anything stupid like that, Ditz," Lyle replied, barely glancing up from the report he was grudgingly reading.

4. A Bag of Gold

"Maybe not," the medic said, pulling the page from Lyle's loose grip. "But he's a fuckload more worried than he's showing you."

Lyle grinned. "He's okay, Ditz. He's short on money, sure, but do you know why?"

Ditzy shook his head. "He's fucking tight-lipped about it. He's got his teammates and
even our guys wondering about him."

Lyle leaned back. "His girlfriend is pregnant. Her parents turfed her out without a thought, and he's been getting her set up in a place."

"He needs to keep every penny he makes, then."

"That, or be handed a fucking bag of gold."

5. Thrust a Despised Antagonist Over a Precipice

“Honest, Corporal, I really don’t know what I’m doing. I know I lost the fucking bet, but I can’t manage.”

Blade let his lips widen in a smile. “Good call, kid, knowing when to yell for help. So, what do you need?” His hands moving slowly as he sharpened his Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife, Blade cut his eyes up at Kelly.

“I have to get rid of the rats in the armoury. I thought maybe I could harry them over the edge into the pond somehow.”

“How good are you with things that go bang, kid?”

Kelly blinked, then grinned. “Fan-fucking-tastic!”

+1.  On A Dark Night

The use of flash-bangs in herding rodents had been rather unorthodox, but their level of effectiveness had been superb. Every rat in the armoury had made a run for it at the noise and light, and for the first time in years the place was vermin-free.

Kelly stood at Lyle’s desk.

“Well done, Private,” Lyle said. “Now, Ditzy has some information for you. He’s going to bring you up to speed on what we call the Unit Wives-and-Girlfriends. The WAGs are mobilising to help. Annabelle’s not alone anymore.”

The smile on Kelly’s face rivalled the light of the rising sun.

Aw, a happy ending! Yay. They're not going to let him sink without a second chance, but he'd batter shape up now! :D

Well, he did in the end "pay up" on the lost bet!
Even if he did need Blade's assistance...

It just came to me in pieces; couldn't decide which idea to use and went with all of them.
Glad it worked!

Good to see them taking care of their own - albeit in their own way.
